While amethyst is the best-known purple stone, there are a number of others to choose from. Tanzanite, one of the most newly-discovered gemstones, is an excellent stone. Onyx is a form of quartz. The colors of its bands range from white to almost every color. Specimens of onyx available contain bands of colors of white, tan, and brown. Pure black onyx is common, and perhaps the most famous variety, but not as common as onyx with banded colors. It is usually cut as a cabochon, or into beads, and is also used for intaglios and cameos, where the bands make the image contrast with the background.
If onyx is cleaned with an ultrasonic device or cleaned with abrasive or ammonia based chemicals, discoloration of the stone may occur. So be careful wearing it when using cleaning solutions around the house.

Jade was a rare and valued material in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. It is also the gemstone for the 19th Anniversary. People in the Middle Ages thought that aquamarine could magically overcome the effects of poison. Ancient sailors traveled with aquamarine crystals, believing that it would ensure a safe voyage, and guarantee a safe return; they often slept with the stones under their pillow to ensure sound sleep. They believed the siren’s (mermaid) fish-like lower body was made of aquamarine.
